Your Journey Through Portugal

Seven Days of Granite Streets and the Terraced Douro

Experience Portugal through two timeless landscapes — Porto’s granite streets and the tranquil beauty of the Douro Valley. From private tours of the city’s architectural landmarks and artisan traditions to leisurely river cruises, terraced hillsides, and restorative days immersed in nature, every moment is designed at an unhurried pace. Thoughtfully curated for travelers who appreciate heritage, craftsmanship, and the luxury of slowing down.

Days 1 to 2: Porto

The journey opens in Porto, where granite streets, azulejo-clad façades, and the Douro River reflect centuries of Portuguese heritage. Private tours, architectural treasures, and authentic local flavours offer an elegant introduction to northern Portugal before the journey transitions into the tranquil landscapes beyond the city.

DAY 1Arrival in Porto

Your journey begins in Porto, a city of granite and blue-and-white tile stacked steeply above
the Douro where it meets the sea — a working, soulful place that has made its living from the river for a thousand years. Met at the airport and settled into a heritage house in the old centre, you take your first evening gently, walking down through the lantern-lit lanes to the Ribeira waterfront as the sun drops behind the far bank and the city’s lights come on across
the water.

  • Activities: Private arrival transfer, evening walk to the Ribeira
  • Meals: Lunch at leisure. Dinner at leisure.
  • Accommodation: Overnight at the Hospes Infante Sagres Porto, the first five star hotel in Porto.

DAY 2Porto in Depth

A day spent reading the city through its details. You stand beneath the twenty thousand painted tiles of São Bento station, climb the Clérigos tower for the rooftops and the river
bends, step into the neo-Gothic theatre of the Lello bookshop, and are admitted privately to the Bolsa Palace’s Arab Room, a gilded fantasy of the Alhambra built by nineteenth-century merchants to impress the world. Between the monuments, a food walk threads the markets and hole-in-the-wall counters where Porto actually eats.

  • Activities: São Bento station, Clérigos tower, Livraria Lello, private Bolsa Palace Arab Room, food walk
  • Meals: Breakfast at the hotel. Lunch at leisure. Dinner at the hotel.
  • Accommodation: Overnight at the Hospes Infante Sagres, Porto

Days 3 to 7: The Douro Valley

The journey continues into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Douro Valley, where terraced hillsides, tranquil river landscapes, and timeless villages invite a slower pace of travel. From scenic cruises aboard a traditional rabelo boat and immersive artisan experiences to historic towns, forest trails, and moments of complete relaxation at one of the region’s finest luxury retreats, these final days celebrate the beauty, craftsmanship, and serenity of northern Portugal before your private transfer back to Porto for departure.

DAY 3Into the Valley

The road follows the river east, and the world slows. Terraces climb the hillsides in their thousands, cut by hand over centuries into one of the most dramatic agricultural landscapes on earth — a UNESCO-listed valley where the Douro coils below and the light lies long across the slopes. You arrive at a restored manor high above the water and feel the trip
change gear entirely, from city to silence.

  • Activities: Scenic drive into the Douro Valley, estate at leisure
  • Meals: Breakfast at the hotel. Lunch en route. Dinner at the estate.
  • Accommodation: Overnight at Six Senses Douro Valley.

DAY 4The River

The Douro is best understood from its own surface, and today you take to it in a rabelo, the flat-bottomed wooden boat that once carried the harvest downriver to Porto. You drift beneath the terraces, the only sound the water and the wind, stopping riverside for a long lunch — the valley revealing itself slowly, bend by bend, exactly as it was meant to be seen.

  • Activities: Private rabelo-boat cruise on the Douro, riverside lunch
  • Meals: Breakfast at the estate. Riverside lunch. Dinner at the estate.
  • Accommodation: Overnight at Six Senses Douro Valley.

DAY 5The Slow Douro

A day of the valley’s quieter arts. Your hands learn the old craft of azulejo tile-painting; a nearby quinta shows how its olive oil is pressed and its almonds grown; and the baroque town of Lamego waits with its monumental stairway climbing to the church above. The pace is contemplative throughout — this is a landscape that rewards slowness, and the day is built to give it.

  • Activities: Azulejo tile-painting, olive-and-almond quinta, Lamego, forest trails
  • Meals: Breakfast at the estate. Lunch at the estate. Dinner at the estate.
  • Accommodation: Overnight at Six Senses Douro Valley.

DAY 6 Côa or Leisure

The valley holds one more secret for the curious: the Côa Valley, where thousands of prehistoric engravings were cut into the rock along the river some twenty thousand years ago, a UNESCO-listed open-air gallery from the dawn of art. Visit it privately, or trade it entirely for the pool, the spa and the gardens — the choice, as ever on this journey, is yours.

  • Activities: Private Côa Valley rock-art excursion (optional), or spa and gardens
  • Meals: Breakfast at the estate. Lunch at the estate. Dinner at the estate.
  • Accommodation: Overnight at Six Senses Douro Valley.

DAY 7Departure

A final breakfast above the terraces before the drive back down the valley to Porto and your onward flight, the river accompanying you most of the way.

  • Activities: Private transfer to Porto airport
  • Meals: Breakfast at the estate.
