Day 1
Arrival
Your journey begins on the edge of Shanghai, but the city can wait: you are carried out to a camphor forest where an entire village of Ming and Qing houses, saved from a rising reservoir, was dismantled and rebuilt whole, tree by ancient tree. You settle into one of these four-hundred-year-old homes, and the first evening is the forest at dusk, the old timber and stone around you, the quiet strangeness of sleeping inside a rescued piece of the past.
Day 2
The Antique Village
A day spent inside the saved village and the patience that created it. Alongside a private heritage architect you walk among the four-hundred-year-old houses and come to understand the years of painstaking work it took to move them, an act of preservation so devoted it approaches art. A tea ceremony marks the slow centre of the afternoon, and the traditional bathhouse closes the day, the whole of it an education in a virtue this journey will keep returning to.
Day 3
Shanghai City
A single measured half-day is enough to feel Shanghai without letting it take over. You walk the colonial waterfront of the Bund, its European facades facing the science-fiction skyline across the river, wander the plane-shaded lanes of the former French Concession, and step into the Ming-dynasty garden hidden in the old town, before the quiet of the forest draws you back, the city experienced as a vivid interlude rather than the main event.
Day 4
To West Lake
A private high-speed train, gliding at three hundred kilometres an hour with barely a sensation of speed, carries you to Hangzhou and a converted tea village set in a wooded valley. The evening is the estate at dusk, the tea terraces rising on the slopes above, the pace slowing to match a landscape Chinese poets have praised for a thousand years.
Day 5
West Lake
The lake the poets loved, met at dawn before the day arrives. A private boat carries you out onto West Lake through the morning mist, the causeways and pavilions emerging softly from the water, and you walk the Longjing tea terraces with a tea master and step into the cliffside grottoes of Lingyin, read as art and history. It is a day given to the particular calm that this corner of China has cultivated for a millennium.
Day 6
Departure
A last quiet morning among the terraces before your chauffeur provides a comfortable executive transfer to Hangzhou Airport or high-speed rail connection back to Shanghair, carries you onward for your flight.
